About Us

S3® is a proven, effective, and legal way to make a life-changing Christian impact in your communities’ public schools.  The public school system is the largest youth group in America and Students Standing Strong® can show you how to legally establish a faith based community on the junior and senior high school campus.  Enabled by the Federal Equal Access Act, Students Standing Strong® is a partnering ministry that unites with parents, churches, and community leaders to help kids stand strong in their Christian faith through Biblical teaching, leadership, encouragement, accountability and outreach. Together we can equip our young people to be Christian leaders who teach and live the Word on their local public school campus!

At Colleyville Middle School, Alex Huddleston (rt) laughs with her brother Forrest Huddleston, the group's viice president, after the Students Standing Strong meeting January 20, 2006. Each student chose a prayer slip, someone else's, to pray for. Teens are openly professing their Christianity in organizations like Students Standing Strong in Northeast Tarrant County.  Terry Ann Kelly - Terry Ann is President and Founder of Students Standing Strong. Her husband, Jay and their five children support her God inspired desire to equip and encourage middle and high school students to boldly and uncompromisingly stand strong in their Christian faith. With undergraduate and Masters degrees from Baylor University, Terry Ann taught communication courses at the university level for many years. Currently through Students Standing Strong, magazine articles, radio, television and speaking engagements she encourages Christians to joyfully obey God’s Word. “In 3 John: 4, the Apostle John refers to fellow Christians as his ‘children’. I love this verse because our 5 children are not only biological children but also our “children” in faith. This verse is written on our kitchen wall. “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth". "S3 has helped them walk out that Truth".

BethBeth Burgin -
Beth is married to Mark, a pilot for FedEx, and has one daughter who is a recently graduated RN and ER nurse.  Beth has a BS in Business from John Brown University and MS in Accounting from the University of Arkansas.  Beth became S3’s Office Manager in 2008.  She is involved with the financial, communications and home office operations of the ministry.

“I love how S3 connects Christian students to other Christians on their public school campus.  It’s so easy to feel overwhelmed and outnumbered in our culture today.  Even the Christian students who don’t regularly participate in S3 can be encouraged when they see classmates wearing their S3 shirts and know they have a common bond.”

LauraLaura Ball - Laura is married to her husband Bob, of 21 years.  Her family includes four children and two grandchildren. Together they serve in their local church. Laura accepted a staff position with Students Standing Strong in 2014. She oversees the student on-line database management system, coordinates fundraising efforts and helps manage the S3 web site. Laura is also a substitute teacher and has continued to volunteer as the parent coordinator for the S3 club at her children’s middle school since 2011.

“My favorite part of S3 is watching the middle schooolers circle up, hold hands and pray at the end of each club.  What a privilege to hear the Lord’s name each week in my children’s public school.”

SheliSheli Johnson - Sheli is married to her high school sweetheart, Lance, and has two children.  She had a professional career in sales after graduation from college but feels being a full-time wife and  mother has been her greatest calling and joy in life.  Sheli became involved with Students Standing Strong in 2006 and has been active ever since!  She has served as a parent coordinator at Grapevine Middle School and currently volunteers with the high school students at Grapevine High School and Colleyville Heritage High School. She joined the staff in 2012 and serves as Director of Programs, assisting with club development.

“There is nothing that blesses me more than seeing students come together at school because they love the Lord and want to grow in their faith, support one another, and make a difference.”

MichelleMichele Winn - Michele has been married to Darin for over 20 years. They have three high school and college aged children. She became involved in Students Standing Strong  in 2008 when she started S3 in their son’s intermediate school. Later, when he moved up to middle school, she began an S3 club where again she volunteered as the S3 parent coordinator. Her focus during those years was taking the student-led curriculum and helping kids find ways to be the “hands and feet” of Jesus through outreach programs. Michele joined the staff in 2014 as personal assistant to Terry Ann Kelly.

"My favorite part was being a volunteer parent coordinator at our children’s middle and intermediate schools and later having former students come back and tell me how their S3 club impacted their lives.Several have even continued to volunteer in the community outreach programs they began in their Students Standing Strong club.  I was definitely blessed by the experience."

BEGINNINGS

Terry Ann and Jay Kelly  live in Grapevine, Texas  have 5 incredible kids!  They started our parenting journey determined to educate all of them in Christian school because, at that time, they felt it was the best way for us to ensure that our number one parenting goal would be accomplished:  That Katelin, Clay, Colt, Clint and Chad would one day leave our home knowing they are deeply loved by their parents and their God no matter the choices they make, realizing God’s plan for their life is incredible and desiring to live their lives according to His Word, filled with His Spirit!

And so they began the Christian School experience and it was great! After a few years, however, Jay felt for their family, it would be better to move all 5 to public school. It wasn’t a change Terry Ann was ready for, so she went along “kicking and screaming” …a little and “praying and crying”…a lot!

Their middle son, Colt, made the public school move in the 5th grade—the last year of elementary school in their district and they only knew a few boys in the whole grade through community sports.  She remembers thinking, “5th grade is one thing, but there is no way that I am going to send our naïve, sheltered, soon to be 6th grade son into , what was in my mind a scary place…public middle school!”  And she prayed some more!  In the midst of her worry (how she wished she could say her faith was so strong that “worry” was not a word in her vocabulary), a little idea came into her mind and heart:  So Colt, won’t feel totally alone in his faith and convictions, why not take the school directory and invite all of the fifth graders from his school, (yes, all 112 of them), to our home for a party!  But not just any party!

It would be filled with fun, food, and even a free t-shirt, but more importantly, she would talk to them about the new, exciting and sometimes scary challenges they would face as they moved into middle school.  She would encourage them that they could approach this new time in life with confidence, not having to give into negative peer pressure, if only they would commit themselves to living their lives to honor their parents and our Lord Jesus Christ!  She wanted them to know that there may not be many, but that there were at least a few students in that group of 112 that were being taught the same values in their own homes and churches!

Party Planning began to take form in her mind, but she only knew one mom who she thought might help her.  She had met her at a garage sale where she learned she went to church!  That was good enough for her!  She loved the idea and recruited a few others and the “party” idea spread via the grapevine.  It dawned on her:  Catholic & Protestant parents want the same thing.  We all want our kids’ faith to be so personal that it affects the way they live.  We want our kids to not only have beliefs but we want them to have the conviction to live those beliefs out in their everyday life, affecting the choices they make!

The S3 logo came to her mind and was drawn on a coffee shop napkin (with a teacher friend adding the “3”).  The theme verse of I Corinthians 15:58 popped off the page of her Bible.  A home-made, computer generated invitation, was created and mailed and 75 students along with parents and siblings showed up on party day—somewhere between 200 and 250 people in all.  From that simple party, S3 has grown into an organization that has a program designed to encourage students through their senior year in high school!

So, here is the bottom line:

A mom with only a desire to raise a boy with a heart for God combined with a simple God-breathed party idea plus an obedience to God’s leading has become an organization designed to help you, a mom or dad with a desire to raise a boy or girl with a heart for God, plan a simple party or start a student-led club  in obedience to God’s leading so your student knows they are not alone in their faith and that even when many are not, they can live for Christ!

STATEMENT OF FAITH

God - There is one and only one living and true God.  He is the Creator, Redeemer, Preserver, and Ruler of the universe to whom we owe the highest love, reverence, and obedience.  God reveals Himself to us as Father, Son and Holy Spirit; these three are co-equal and are one God.

Gen. 1:1; Gen 1:26-27;   Gen 3:22;   Psalm 90:2;   Matt 28:19; 1 Peter 1:1-2; 2 Corinthians 13:14

Jesus Christ - Christ is the eternal Son of God. In His incarnation as Jesus Christ He was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, perfectly revealed and did the will of God.  Jesus lived a sinless human life.  His death on the cross made provision for the redemption of men from sin.  He was raised from the dead with a glorified body, ascended into heaven and is now exalted at the right hand of the Father.  He will return in power and glory to judge the world and to consummate His redemptive mission.  He now dwells in all believers as the living, and ever present, Lord.

Matthew 1:22, 23;   Isaiah 9:6;   John 1:1-5;   John 14:10-30 ;  Heb 4:14-15;   1 Corinthians 15:3-4;  Romans 1:3-4;  Acts 1:9-11;1 Timothy 6:3-4;   Titus 2:13

Holy Spirit - The Holy Spirit is co-equal with the Father and the Son of God.  He is present in the world to make men aware of their need for Jesus Christ.  He also lives in every Christian from the moment of salvation.  He provides the Christian with power for living, understanding of spiritual truth, and guidance in doing what is right.  He gives every believer a spiritual gift when they are saved.  As Christians we seek to live under His control daily.

2 Corinthians 3:17; John 16:7-13; John 14:16-17; Acts 1:8 1; Corinthians 2:12;   1 Corinthians 3:16

Bible - The Holy Bible is God's Word to us.  Human authors, under the divine guidance of the Holy Spirit, wrote it.  It is the supreme source of truth for Christian beliefs and living.  Because it is inspired by God, it is the truth without any mixture of error.

2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20-21; 2 Timothy 1:13; Psalm 119:105; Psalm 119:160; Psalm 12:6; Proverbs 30:5

People - People are made in the spiritual image of God, to be like Him in character.  People are the supreme object of God's creation.  Although every person has tremendous potential for good, all of us are marred by an attitude of disobedience toward God called "sin." This attitude separates people from God and causes many problems in life.

Genesis 1:27; Psalm 8:3-6; Isaiah 53:6a; Romans 3:23; Isaiah 59:1-2

Salvation - Salvation is God's free gift to us but we must accept it.  We can never make up for our sin by self-improvement or good works.  Only by belief in Jesus Christ as God's offer of forgiveness can anyone be saved from sin's penalty.  When we turn from our self-ruled life and turn to Jesus in faith we are saved.  Eternal life begins the moment one receives Jesus Christ into his/her life by faith.

Romans 6:23; Ephesians 2:8-9; John 14:6; John 1:12; Titus 3:5; Galatians 3:26; Romans 5:1

Integrity of curriculum - S3 is an interdenominational ministry that seeks to serve and cooperate with all segments of the body of Christ.  Though denominations have different doctrines other than those listed above, our policy is that these practices and teachings should not be a part of any S3 Club activity to maintain a spirit of unity in the ministry.  Individual clubs will not alter any S3 curriculum.  Our ministry goal is strengthening students spiritually through the provided S3 curriculum while respecting the individual church affiliation of students.
